News from the Oberlin College Library
Unglue.it
is an organization that runs pledge campaigns to provide Open Access to books, while rewarding their authors for their work. Authors and publishers work together to determine what
amount of money lets them freely share their books with the world while
still making a living. When campaigns succeed, authors and publishers get paid, and they issue a free electronic edition under a Creative Commons license. In support of this experiment with Open Access, the Oberlin College Library recently pledged a donation toward ungluing Feeding the City: Work and Food Culture of the Mumbai Dabbawalas, by Sarah Roncaglia. So far, Unglue.it has successfully "unglued" four books. Hopefully, we will see many more to come!
Food studies – the who/what/why/when/where of food
production, preparation, and consumption – has an increasingly large scholarly
and cultural profile.
