Illiad maintenance completed!

We successfully moved our Illiad service onto a new server over the past few days and most features seem to be working normally. We are aware of some problems users are having accessing their articles delivered electronically. We will be pursuing a fix to this ASAP, and in the meantime we can e-mail the articles as attachments. Please contact Allison Gallaher with the transaction number (TN:nnnnn) of your request and we'll send it out to you. We're sorry for the inconvenience.

ILLiad unavailable beginning 1:30 p.m. Friday, January 12

To complete some hardware upgrades, it is necessary for us to have ILLiad down from 1:30 p.m. on Friday January 12 until sometime on Tuesday, January 16. During that time, you will be unable to make new ILL requests or check on the status of existing requests. This will not affect your OhioLINK requesting at all. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Open Access & Author Control of Copyright: a Workshop for Faculty

Two leading open access advocates will be on campus to lead a faculty workshop on Tuesday, January 16, 10 a.m., Mudd 443:

Peter Suber, Research Professor of Philosophy at Earlham College, author of the SPARC Open Access Newsletter, and
Michael Carroll, Associate Professor of Law at Villanova University, author of the SPARC Author Addendum.

The workshop will provide an overview of the growing international movement to create open access to scholarship through open access journals and open archiving. It will include practical advice on how Oberlin authors can exert control over their copyright and make their peer-reviewed journal articles and other work more accessible in digital repositories, such as the Ohio Digital Commons, which will be available later this year.

Contact the library administrative office (x55041) to register for the workshop.

New in the Art Library: In Spirit

View of In SpiritDaniel Essig’s artists’ books explore ideas of life, death and regeneration. He creates sculptural books that combine ancient binding styles and distressed finishes with found and treasured objects from other times and cultures. We are especially excited to have an opportunity to acquire In Spirit, Dan’s second “bridge book” and the one that helped build his reputation as a pioneer in the world of book art. Its unique construction ingeniously solves the problem posed by all artists' books: how to elegantly and effectively create a book which can also be understood as an art object. Essig’s bridge books uniquely join these two worlds, and In Spirit fills a special role as the prototype and catalyst for future works.
