Science Soirée in Science Library, Friday Nov. 6 at 6:30 pm!

Here's your chance to make some noise in the science library!  We're looking for instrumentalists and vocalists who want to make beautiful music -- briefly -- to demonstrate the range of sounds possible and the acoustic response in the library.  Emeritus Professor of Physics Bruce Richards will share some observations after each 3-5 minute musical offering.

The event is Friday, Nov. 6 from 6:30-7:45 pm.  Enjoy music, snacks, and conversation as Prof. Richards measures some of Oberlin's finest instrumentalists and vocalists as they test out the acoustics in the Science Library.  [Note: library services will not be available during this special after-hours event.]

Please email the Science Library to volunteer as a musician for this exciting event!

On Tuesday, October 27th local writer and photographer Linda Grashoff spoke to the Friends of the Oberlin College Library about her recent book:  They Breathe Iron:  Artistic and Scientific Encounters with an Ancient Life Form.

Access our resources from off campus

Are you going away for fall break, but still want to do some research?  Even when you are not on campus, most of the library's electronic resources (ebooks and research databases) are still available to you!  Just follow these instructions (we recommend using the VPN option). If you've not yet activated the barcode number on the back of your ID, email us with the information and we'll update our records. Have a good week!

OBIS downtime: Monday, October 19, 9 - 10 am

OBIS will be down for a short time on Monday morning for a software upgrade.  We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.  You may search Oberlin's holdings using the OhioLINK central catalog. Use the advanced search or modify a search to limit your retrieval just to Oberlin's holdings. 

Unfortunately, because our patron records from the library system will also be unavailable, you will not be able to make OhioLINK requests while OBIS is down.  

Ezproxy URLs that let you use your library barcode to access remote ejournals and databases will not work while OBIS is down.  If you use your ObieID to sign in to the campus VPN network you'll have access to remote ejournals and databases as if you were on the campus network.

Artist Steve Pittelkow will talk about the history of marbled paper and offer a demonstration of the technique.

Disability awareness highlighted at campus libraries

In October, all campus libraries feature displays on themes of disability. The displays have been designed and curated by groups of students in the First Year Seminar titled Disability, taught by Prof. Hamilton.

The displays each highlight a different approach to understanding disability:

• "Conception, Birth, Life: Intersection with Parents and Children" (Main Library)
• "Disability in Music" (Conservatory Library)
• "Disability in the Lives of Visual Artist" (Art Library)
• "Learning Disabilities" (Science Library)

October is National Disability Awareness Month.

Join the Friends of the Library for “Allusions to Seasons and Weather,” a talk by Peter Swendsen, Associate Professor of Computer Music and Digital Arts.

Allusions to Seasons and Weather  is a suite of four works based on Swendsen's experiences with nature in Norway, where he spent a year as a Fulbright Fellow.
