Best Wishes & Congratulations to Ray English!
Ray English retires at the end
of this month, after serving for 25 years as Azariah Smith Root Director of
Libraries. Ray came to Oberlin in 1979 as
Head Reference Librarian, then served as Associate Director of Libraries from
1986-1990. He has led the college
libraries through a period of enormous change.
Under his leadership, Oberlin earned the 2002 Excellence in Academic
Libraries Award from the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). In presenting him the Academic Research Librarian of the Year award in 2006, ACRL praised his "advocacy for open access to the results of
scholarly research" and acknowledged his leadership of its Scholarly
Communications Program and with the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources
Coalition (SPARC). In 2009 Ray received the Hugh Atkinson
Memorial Award that recognizes “an eminent librarian and leader” in the
academic library profession. More about Ray’s many accomplishments as
library director can be found in the Fall 2014 issue of the Library
Perspectives newsletter. His last day in the office will be Thursday, June
25. The library staff wishes Ray a
well-deserved and productive retirement!
