Spotlight on Climate Change

Stop by the spotlight area in Mudd (near Azariah’s), where we focus on climate change/climate disruption — arguably one of the most profound challenges of the 21st century.  Our selection of books is just a sample of the hundreds of library resources on all aspects of climate change. Ecology, urban studies, politics, peace and conflict studies, atmospheric and ocean sciences are a few of the fields of studies represented by the titles on display; all displayed titles are available for checkout.

Database trial: Data Planet

Data Planet is a repository of statistical information, containing over 250 billion data points. The data can be searched, analyzed, visualized, cited and exported on either of its 2 interfaces:

• Data-Planet Statistical Ready Reference is geared toward novice users, and provides simple and refined searching of the extensive Data-Planet repository of standardized and structured statistical data. 
• The Statistical Datasets interface is geared toward experienced/expert users, and provides the ability to instantly chart, map, and compare two billion time series at the county, MSA, census-tract, state, and country level.

Ray English Will Be Featured Speaker at the Friends of the Library annual dinner

Ray English, Azariah Root Director of Libraries, will deliver the talk at the Friends of the Library Annual Dinner at 8pm in the Root Room of the Carnegie Building.  All are welcome!

Never fear ... you can still jump right in to research, and access Oberlin's electronic resources even when you're away from campus. Just follow these instructions. If you've not yet activated your barcode number on the back of your ID, email us with the information and we'll update our records. You need this to be validated as an Oberlin student when you're off-campus. Enjoy your break! 

Privacy concerns with Adobe Digital Editions (ADE 4)

OhioLINK issued a statement regarding the discovery that there are concerns about data security with Adobe Digital Editions version 4, software used for reading electronic books.

Friends of the Oberlin Public Library Book Sale

The Friends of the Oberlin Public Library's Fall 2014 book sale is going on this weekend! Also for sale are records, DVDs, and CDs. Low prices: most items are just 50¢ to $1.  Proceeds support the library's excellent programs and services.

Sat. Oct. 11, 10am-5:30pm (all items 1/2 price)
Sun. Oct. 12, 1-3:30pm (all items just 10¢!)

The public library is located at 65 S. Main St., across the street from the post office. The book sale is in the community room, to the right after you enter the lobby.

Claire Solomon ’98, Assistant Professor of Hispanic Studies will speak about her new book: 

“Fictions of the Bad Life: The Naturalist Prostitute and Her Avatars in Latin American Literature”

The first comprehensive and interdisciplinary study of the prostitute in Latin American literature, Solomon’s book shows the gender, ethnic, and racial identities that emerge in the literary figure of the prostitute during the consolidation of modern Latin American states in the late nineteenth century in the literary genre of Naturalism.  [Publisher summary]
