No local student checks after May 1

In accordance with College practice, the Library will not accept payments from students in the form of checks drawn on local banks during May. If do your banking from your permanent address, you may still pay by check. The library also accepts cash and money orders.

Why does the college have this policy?

Hi, anonymous. According to the Student Accounts Office, it takes 2 weeks for checks to work their way through the Oberlin channels and make it to the banks to clear. Experience shows us that many local student bank accounts are closed for the summer, resulting in bounced checks and high fees (the college charges $35 when checks bounce, and the bank usually charges the account as well). In "better-safe-than-sorry" mode, we're advised to avoid these problems by requesting payment in cash or money order form beginning May 1.
