Civil War Sesquicentennial (say that 3 times fast!)

In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the first year of the Civil War, the Oberlin College Archives is partnering with the Oberlin Heritage Center to begin to build a digital collection of Civil War era items in the Oberlin College Archives. This summer Karyn Norwood, an AmeriCorps Ohio History Service Program volunteer serving out of the Oberlin Heritage Center, is assisting the Archives staff with the selection, scanning and description of period materials (photographs, documents, handbills, etc.) for digitization. Karyn will head to Simmons College in the fall for their graduate program in Library and Information Science.

Communities throughout the country are commemorating the Civil War over the next few years with special events, exhibits, and programs. Check the Oberlin Heritage Center website for activities in Oberlin. Visit Karyn Norwood's blog on Oberlin and the Civil War.

The digital collection will provide researchers access to primary source materials relating to Oberlin’s participation in the Civil War. Oberlin faculty and students will be encouraged to participate in the project over the next few years. Please see the Archives web site at www.oberlin.edu/archive, or contact the Archives staff at archive@oberlin.edu for additional information about the Civil War collection.
