Extended hours/late night access to Mudd via card swipe

We're pleased to announce that this semester the A-Level and Scholar Studies will remain open until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights. The rest of the building still closes at 10 pm. Access is limited to holders of OCIDs, using the card swipe at the front entrance.

We've also decided to activate card swipe access Sunday - Thursday nights after 11:45 pm. The whole building is still open until 2 am, but access is limited to those with OCIDs.

Thanks so much for your cooperation with these safety measures.

Young adults reading more

According to a recently released report from the National Endowment for the Arts, literary reading has risen among adult Americans for the first time in over a quarter-century. “Literary” reading refers to the reading of any novels, short stories, poems, or plays in print or online. After decades of declining trends, the report, Reading on the Rise, documents a decisive increase among virtually every group measured in this comprehensive national survey. The most significant growth has been among young adults (ages 18-24), the group that had shown the largest declines in earlier surveys. This group went from a 20 percent decline in 2002 to a 21 percent increase in 2008–a startling level of change. During their high school years, this group was the target of the largest literary initiatives in the NEA’s history, a possible explanation for at least some of the change. Read the press release, or download the full report (16-pp. pdf).

Network to be down Sat. 1/24

Note that CIT's planned downtime for the campus network will affect the library's web site, too. Plan ahead (or just sleep in)! As a stand-in for OBIS, off-campus users can search the OhioLINK Catalog, then use Limit/Sort and choose Oberlin under the "WHERE Item is located" pull-down option.

Happy Winter Term

This is a perfect time to catch up on all those books you meant to read last semester but were too busy ... scout out the selection of our new books and recreational reading in the Current Reading area in Azariah's and curl up on a comfy sofa (sorry, no counter service in the cafe until February).
